Soul Shine Project

Vision and Mission:

The Soulshine Project brings music and live music performance into the lives of children and teens with cancer and other life altering diseases. The therapeutic value of music is well documented. Physical, psychological and even spiritual needs are met and there is respite, rejuvenation and joy nurtured in these young people as they discover or deepen their discovery of music. All artists, especially the younger ones we bring to this project are enriched by their participation. Music is a bridge that connects us all. We seek to play a role in transforming an entire generation's view of illness as we bring our love and talent to young people facing cancer and other medical challenges.

A Brief History:

The Soulshine Project is the vision and now the enduring legacy of Brent Albert, a tireless advocate of children facing illness and young musicians. Brent made friends with people worldwide. He lived life with extraordinary courage, humor, honesty, and humility. Almost from the time he was diagnosed with a brain tumor, Brent began to talk about doing something for all the young people he saw in treatment. It was natural for the centerpiece of this to be music. He quickly convinced the station where he did his weekly radio show, Freedom One Radio, and Heart of Gold Entertainment, a promoter of young artists and charitable events, to join him in this noble project. The name Soulshine comes from a song written by Warren Haynes (Gov't Mule, Allman Brothers) that Brent's dad shared with him. It is a powerful song that conveys the spirit of our mission. The Soul Shine Project is sponsored by and under the fiscal agency of Rock Against Cancer.

Goals:

• To Produce, publicize and market a compilation CD featuring 14 young artists/bands with the intent of jump-starting initial awareness for the Soulshine Project.

• To Produce an event that marks the debut of the Soulshine Project and the finished CD.

• Ongoing music performances will continue to raise funds and awareness for Soulshine.

• Continued close collaboration with Rock Against Cancer will allow our wider ongoing goals of funding music therapy and bringing music performance and instruction to treatment facilities eventually networking these facilities and providing online resources to young people in treatment and their families.

• To Nurture the spirit of service and advocacy that Brent Albert showed us in his short but rich life.
