"School
of Rock"“Hot Topic Foundation-School of Rock” provides
musical instruments, drums, recording equipment, Music Therapists and
technical support to pediatric oncology treatment centers. Children being
treated for cancer and/or their families benefit from access to instruments
and recording equipment and interaction with Music therapists. New research
shows: “When kids play music, bad moods are banished and good moods
are enhanced. What playing music does: It makes children more optimistic,
joyful, friendly, and calm, and helps vanish feelings of pessimism and
sadness. Music reduces pain and increases kid’s feelings of control”.
Researchers theorize that music not only provides a distraction from the
pain, but also engages kids emotionally unlike other stimulants. Providing
instruments and facilitated recording to kids being treated for cancer
will help enrich their lives by ‘enabling them to express themselves
musically’.
"Stars Night Out"
Children being treated for cancer or recently off treatment enjoy a night out to meet and greet artists and attend a live concert. To date, children have met: Edwin McCain, Sister Hazel, Hootie & the
Blowfish, Barenaked Ladies, Bon Jovi, Matchbox Twenty, Nelly Furtado, and others.
"Gifts from the Heart"
"Gifts from the Heart" serves children who are unable
to leave the hospital by providing gift packages from artists that include
items such as CDs and CD players, autographed band photographs and/or T-shirts.
