Charlotte Center CityFest.
In April 2001, kids being treated at Carolinas Medical Center enjoyed a weekend of activities thanks to the generosity of the CityFest organizers. Teens received the "Star" treatment from Hootie & the Blowfish, receiving autographed pictures, Tshirts, and posing for photographs with the band.
"You don't have to look very hard to see how cancer affects each and everyone of our lives. Rock Against Cancer allows a little light to shine on the children with this illness and I feel fortunate to have been a part of it." --Jim Sonefeld (drummer for Hootie & the Blowfish)
Ken Block, lead singer of Sister Hazel visited the Rock Against Cancer booth, he signed autographs for fans and visited with Founder, Lisa White, and Vice President, Corby Short.
"I wanted to let you know that Kenna and I enjoyed meeting the band members from Sister Hazel so much. What a boost for Kenna after all that she has endured the last seven months. The guys made her feel really special. Kenna was so thrilled to be on stage and see the concert up close. Please let them know how touched we were and that we think they are really great human beings as well as artists! Thanks!" --Cindy, Kenna's Mom
Later that day teens met band members Jeff Beres, Ryan Newell, Andrew Copeland and Mark Trojanowski and had a 'front row' seat for the concert.
"As for me, I am just so grateful to you and to Hootie and the Blowfish and Sister Hazel. The guys with Sister Hazel went so much out of their way and none of us have forgotten it. Last week, we had our Cancer support group meeting and the kids wanted to listen to Sister Hazel the whole time, so we blared it on the radio during the entire meeting. They have been talking about the concert for weeks." --Amy, Child Life Specialist, who works with the kids being treated for cancer at Carolinas Medical Center
"What I would say about Sister Hazel would be that I think they are totally awesome!! I never had any heroes in my life until I met them. It touched my heart that they took time to sign the T-shirts and talk with us. I REALLY ENJOYED THE CONCERT." --Niki, 14 years old cancer survivor
